INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PHOTOS: TOMORROW!
Individual student photographs will be taken tomorrow, Friday, October 3rd. Please remember to have children wear school uniforms only!   (“Dress Up” pictures are taken in the spring, near Easter time) The photographer will have a variety of backgrounds available. While our vendor doesn’t mind taking pictures of siblings & family members together, it can create scheduling challenges for the school.  Please let your child’s teacher(s) know in advance if you desire to have him/her out of the classroom for additional photo opportunities during that day.

IMPORTANT DATES AHEAD

TECHNOLOGY FEE
A number of families have yet to pay the $75 Technology Program fee.  Please know that the children are already receiving the benefit of this new curriculum and staff training is scheduled. Please know also that, as with any other fee, failure to pay the fee by report card time will result in the report card being withheld.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The CCA Choir needs lots of volunteer help this year.  We will need a musician to assist Mrs. Butler in bringing out the best in our songbirds’ vocal talents for the various performances during the year.  Please contact our 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Butler for more information.

ABOUT THOSE 12:30 EARLY DISMISSAL CONFERENCE DAYS . . .
. . . Here’s what you may already know:
Here at CCA, we are keenly aware of the personal, professional, and family adjustments called for when school is dismissed early—even with prior notice.  We realize as well that many parents would prefer to leave their child in the extended after care. BUT. . .Health Dept. regulations and staffing constraints limit us to accommodate only a certain number of children. If your child is already currently enrolled in aftercare, then his or her space is already “reserved” and you only need to pay an additional $10. Why, you ask?? A meal must be provided for children under care for that length of time.  For aftercare non-subscribers: there will be only a few available slots and the cost is $20 ($10 “drop-in” fee + $10 meal fee). The meal is usually one well received by the kids (they often “vote” on what they will want: pizza, wings, beverage, etc.).

. . . . And here’s what you may not know:
In the past, we have had too many parents who failed to reserve a space for their non-subscriber child or who simply did not pick up their child(ren) until the “normal” time of 3:30 – 3:45. This put CCA in the position of not technically (or legally) providing sufficient adult supervision of children. Further aggravating the situation was more than occasional reluctance to pay the required fees.

PLEASE NOTE: Unscheduled (i.e., unreserved) aftercare clients will be subject to additional costs!

 FALL UNIFORM REMINDER
Our “winter” uniform mandatory beginning date was yesterday, Wednesday, October 1st. Please see last week’s Parent Update or your Student / Family Handbook (available online: www.colonialca.org) for details.

SCHOOL PHOTOS NEXT WEEK

Individual student photographs will be taken next week on Friday, October 3rd. Please remember to have children wear school uniforms only! (There is no P.E. that day). The photographer will have a variety of backgrounds available. While our vendor doesn’t mind taking pictures of siblings & family members together, it can create scheduling challenges for the school. Please let your child’s teacher(s) know in advance if you desire to have him/her out of the classroom for additional photo opportunities during that day.

FALL UNIFORM REMINDER

Our “winter” uniform mandatory beginning date is Wednesday, October 1st. Please see last week’s Parent Update or your Student / Family Handbook for details.

LUNCHES (Once More with FEELING!) Parents, we CANNOT become part of the food preparation cycle for foods your children bring to eat from home! Please do not buy, send, or pack items that need refrigeration or heating! Also, because a person kindly bought a McDonald’s lunch for a child who had forgotten theirs, we now have a rash of children who have “forgotten” their lunch. Children without lunch will be offered a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with water or juice only! Regretfully, we cannot go to McDonalds for forgotten lunches.

UNIFORM EXCHANGE AT BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

Great news! Our PTF is having another “Uniform Exchange” at our next meeting, Back-To-School night, Tuesday, September 23 rd at 5:30 PM , just before the General Meeting at 6:30 . Please note that “uniform exchange” is not a direct “exchange” of one item for another. Rather, parents donate uniforms (in good wear, cleaned and pressed) and other parents buy them. This provides assistance to families in need of uniforms as well as a blessing to parent donors. So plan to “bring ‘em and buy ‘em” at Back-To-School Night!

Please contact PTF President Renee Koromah if you would like to volunteer for a Back-To-School Night activity.

Also, we here at Colonial Christian Academy and Colonial Baptist Church are now in mourning this week for a Colonial Baptist Church family member, Jesse Melton, a United States Marine Corps officer killed this week in Afghanistan. Please join us in prayer for the sake of the Melton/Chance family and for all Americans in our Armed Forces, and their families.

CCA UPDATE FOR

Thursday, August 28, 2008

WELCOME PARENTS, TO YOUR BRAND NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

A hearty “THANX!” To our parents, staff, PTF, and everyone who made possible and attended our annual Parent Orientation on Tuesday. Since there was so much important information given, this issue of the Parent Update will be devoted to passing along the most important aspects for safekeeping as well as for informing the absent parents. SO, HERE WE GO . . !!!

HANDBOOK CORRECTIONS!

Please note the following corrections as they apply to the new handbooks distributed at Tuesday’s meeting: DON’T HAVE A NEW, REVISED HANDBOOK? Come to the office. (One per family, please)

TOPIC PAGE CORRECTION/CHANGE

VOLUNTEERS

This year, volunteers will take on a new and more significant role in CCA’s operation. We need and expect higher levels of involvement to improve our SAFETY, SERVICE, and SATISFACTION! For example, from the very beginning of the school year, we need volunteers to help with SAFETY by monitoring the After Care release of children; volunteers to help us to better SERVICE student needs by joining a regular schedule for cafeteria and classroom assistance ( especially in kindergarten, first, and fifth grades!); and volunteers to improve CCA’s SATISFACTION quotient by joining our School Improvement Team (SIT) for the benefit of all stakeholders. (Please see the sign-up tear-off below)

SPEAKING OF SAFETY

Did you know that most of your teachers and extended care staff were CPR trained & certified? On Wednesday, about a dozen CCA staffers were trained in CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)? Again, we are working hard to ensure the safety and well being of everyone at CCA!

TECHNOLOGY FEE

There were questions about the technology fee ($75 per child) required of all CCA families. Simply put, the fee was assessed in order to purchase, install, and train staff for a comprehensive and innovative technology curriculum (from School Technology Programs: Boston University). Just as we must have effective curricula in Language Arts (Open Court and Harcourt Brace, for example), science (Bob Jones University Press), and mathematics (McGraw-Hill), we must also have competitive offerings in technology instruction. A 21 st century computer lab has little value if its instruction is still that of 20 TH century! Until now, we had no formal, professionally designed technology curriculum. The heightened interest in cost is primarily one of awareness, because it could not be adequately factored in with the current tuition structure. This is a one-time fee for the year. In future years, technology will be included in our customary cost structure as are our other curricular offerings.

THE TECHNOLOGY FEE WAS DUE TUESDAY’S PARENT ORIENTATION MEETING. PLEASE PAY IT ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO BY THEN.

HEALTH FORMS

Please remember that all the required health forms including your child’s immunization records and Physician’s Order form (for the dispensation of medications by school staff) must accompany your child if they are not already in the office by the first day of school. The visiting health nurse from Baltimore County will be at CCA on Tuesday, September 2 nd to review student records.

CARLINE NUMBERS

If you did not attend the Parent Orientation meeting you likely do not have your carline numbers. We have 2 per family (additional numbers are $5 each) and they may be picked up from the office.

HOT LUNCH PROGRAM HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED

Due to the unsustainable administrative and salary costs of the program, we are no longer able to offer hot lunches. We will continue to search for a viable and cost effective option for parents who desire this feature for their children.

WRITERS WANTED !

While most of the talk about writing at CCA has been around a proposed writing lab for children, we want to know if we have adults in our “family” who enjoy writing. At this time, we have opportunities to “show our stuff” with the submission of short writing pieces. The two areas needed at this time are:

  • Blurbs for the website that speak to “Why I/We Chose CCA…and Would Do So Again”, and
  • Short “interest pieces” for submission to “ Baltimore ’s Child” (and perhaps other local publications) that are being solicited by the magazine

INTERESTED?? Please turn in your submission to the office in a sealed enveloped addressed to the principal. Please note: Unsigned pieces cannot be considered, but names will not be submitted if requested, in writing, by the author. I plan to submit something—will you?

Let’s show our children that writing is more fun even than reading!

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Please scroll to the bottom of this page to view CCA's Inclement Weather policy.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

COLONIAL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSING POLICY
In the case of inclement weather, CCA follows the BALTIMORE COUNTY Public Schools procedures. Please consult the local radio, television, and internet notices for the county school closings. If BCPS is closed for weather, CCA is closed. A delayed opening will cause CCA to open late as well--including Extended Care. A 2-hour delay, for example, means that Extended Care will not be available until 9:00 am, with the instructional day beginning at 10:30 am. If BCPS announces an early closing, CCA will adjust its schedule the same number of hours--with NO Extended Aftercare. Due to the volume of calls that would be necessary, CCA cannot call individual parents for closings. Again, please watch and listen to the local media outlets for the BALTIMORE COUNTY Public Schools procedure for the affected day(s). Thank you.
