A NOTE FROM OUR TECHNOLOGY SENTINEL

This is the first in a series of infrequent articles and items of interest to our parents by CCA parent, Ken Davis (President, Mainstreet Technologies, and our weekly Robotics Class teacher). The purpose is to inform and alert parents regarding those areas of electronics, software, and internet access that are of both interest and of concern. For example . . .

Have you seen the ads for the latest game craze, Grand Theft Auto 4?

Many of our parents would be surprised at this and other “M” rated game series’ level of violence, sex, and authority bashing actions that are so casually placed into the hands of impressionable youngsters. By many accounts, such games have caused severe and irreparable damage to the moral and spiritual development of our kids. One or two guiding questions for these games could be 1) Have you seen or played the game? 2) Does your child own (or borrow) a game but hasn’t asked you to play it with them? 3) Is there a game in the house that is used often but talked about seldom? The answers here could indicate a cause for concern!

SPANISH CLASS FIELD TRIP TO DON PABLO’S RESTAURANT

A few notes to participating parents: 1. Food Allergies?? A full menu was given to parents. Therefore, the parent should have provided the school or Ms. Hinds with the pertinent information. 2. Volunteer Hours: If attending and you want volunteer hours credit, please remember to pick up the Volunteer Voucher from the office and have Ms. Hinds initial it for the number of hours before turning it in to the office after the trip. We are expecting a great time!

CA TALENT SHOW—IMPORTANT CHANGES ! ! !

SPRING TESTING “PREVIEW for PARENTS” PACKET
For maximum pupil performance on Spring Assessments, we are again providing the “Preview for Parents workbooks at no charge to families. These booklets allow you and your child to work together to complete one or two activities each day leading up to testing (week of May 12th). They are specially designed to provide the most relevant practice tasks for the Stanford series tests without actually “teaching the test”.
FOR BEST RESULTS, PRACTICE WITH YOUR CHILD DAILY!

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
Next week, the first full week of May, is national Teacher Appreciation Week. Just so you will know, the persons described here as “teachers” include classroom teachers, special area teachers, and classroom assistants. While it does not technically include non-instructional personnel, feel free to recognize other staff in a special way if you so choose. The PTF and administration will provide gifts to the teaching staff in recognition of their fine effort put forth this year.

CCA SUNDAY

THANK YOU, Parents and students! We are truly indebted to our children

…and their most supportive parents for showcasing CCA at last Sunday’s 8 am service here at Colonial Baptist Church. The response was phenomenal as praise poured forth from the mouths of those in attendance. Let’s keep the “spirit and truth” of CCA moving forward as we continue to do God’s work with your children.

Have you visited the school website (www.colonialca.org) lately? Is our website useful to you? How could it better serve your needs? Please send us your thoughts on this topic.

* Why are conferences “by appointment”?

We require appointments so that . . .

  • Teachers can prepare for and not guess about which parents plan to actually come
  • Parents can eliminate guesswork about exactly when they will start and/or finish
  • Parents can engage in meaningful dialogue about their child without feeling pressured to hurry up the conversation

WE EXIST TO SERVE GOD THROUGH SERVING YOU!

EXTENDED CARE AND HALF DAY SERVICES
DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE TO AND REQUESTS FOR SERVICE DURING CCA HALF DAYS, THE EXTENDED CARE PROGRAM WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SERVE CHILDREN BEYOND OUR DAILY CLIENTELE.

Our program currently is staffed for and serves approximately 42 daily children PLUS an unpredictable number of “Drop-ins”. State law and health code mandates require us to maintain a certain pupil-to-caretaker ratio. Whenever a staffer leaves the area to answer the door, take a child to the lavatory, get food from the kitchen, etc., that ratio is affected and we are not fully “covered”. An increased number of staff was the answer, with the expense covered by the “drop-in” payments. However, there have been too many parents who arrived late but have not paid AND parents who do not sign up but whose child shows up, throwing off our mandated ratio. Thus, we regret we cannot accept additional, non-daily children for half-day aftercare.

IF YOU ARE NOT A DAILY, 5-DAYS PER WEEK AFTERCARE CLIENT, YOU MUST MAKE ALTERNATE ARRANGEMENTS AND PICK UP YOUR CHILD AT THE 12:30 DISMISSAL TIME ON OUR NEXT HALF-DAY, FRIDAY, MAY 9 TH.

As always, we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

TRANSPORTATION SERVICE REPLACEMENT

GOOD NEWS! Another child transportation company, the A& T Transportation Service has begun providing service to some of the children who were being serviced by the now departed Executive Express Company. A & T is eager to serve the needs of CCA parents. Please contact them for more information at 443-850-3978 (“Tracey”) or 443-449-0664 (“Aaron”)

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY: MAKE SMOKING DISAPPEAR

Next WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16 TH, CCA will host Illusionist Wayne Alan.

Wayne is contracted by Baltimore County Public Schools and performs a

slight-of-hand show designed to warn young children and teens about the dangers of smoking. The show is scheduled for 2:00 pm , but throughout the day, we will have several very large anti-smoking displays in the building (“Lou Wheeze” and the giant “Carcinogenic Cigarette”). Wayne ’s performance is scripted only toward this theme and has been viewed, reviewed, and approved by the county school authorities. One thing I will do is be certain that if Wayne has to use the term “magic” in any way, there will be a definitive distinction between that concept and simple, explainable, slight-of-hand. Please feel free to join us!

Parents, below is a copy of the information distributed the week prior to Spring Break that denotes very important calendar changes. Please keep this chart handy!

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Please scroll to the bottom of this page to view CCA's Inclement Weather policy.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

COLONIAL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSING POLICY
In the case of inclement weather, CCA follows the BALTIMORE COUNTY Public Schools procedures. Please consult the local radio, television, and internet notices for the county school closings. If BCPS is closed for weather, CCA is closed. A delayed opening will cause CCA to open late as well--including Extended Care. A 2-hour delay, for example, means that Extended Care will not be available until 9:00 am, with the instructional day beginning at 10:30 am. If BCPS announces an early closing, CCA will adjust its schedule the same number of hours--with NO Extended Aftercare. Due to the volume of calls that would be necessary, CCA cannot call individual parents for closings. Again, please watch and listen to the local media outlets for the BALTIMORE COUNTY Public Schools procedure for the affected day(s). Thank you.
